Large Catios & Multi-Cat Enclosures in Michigan

A large catio gives you room to design around how your cats actually live: one watching from a high perch, another resting near the floor, and another following a climbing route. The extra space works best when the layout offers choices.

Choose between an attached and a freestanding catio

An attached enclosure can connect to a suitable window, door, or wall opening. A freestanding enclosure gives you more freedom over location, but you still need a secure way to move cats between the house and enclosure. A tunnel may solve that connection where the route can be fully enclosed, supported, inspected, and cleaned.

Give multiple cats more than one route

Plan separate resting places and ways to pass without forcing a close encounter. A single high shelf reached by one narrow ramp can become a bottleneck. Break up long routes with broad landings, provide lower options, and leave room for a shy cat to retreat. Ask which cats already share space happily and which prefer distance.

Reserve room for people, too

Before filling the enclosure with shelves and furniture, mark the human entrance, door swing, and cleaning route. You should be able to reach latches, inspect the perimeter, and retrieve a cat without climbing over obstacles. If you want a bench, check that a seated person will not block the cats’ main route.

More roof area means more planning

A larger enclosure changes the demands on its frame, roof, supports, and anchoring. Michigan snow, wind, drainage, and existing deck or patio conditions belong in the design discussion. Roof size alone does not establish a safe span or snow capacity. Confirm the specific structural and roofing requirements for the proposed site and materials.

Check the whole boundary

A complete enclosure includes the top, sides, base, doors, and every connection to the house or tunnel. On soil, the perimeter needs a considered ground detail. On a deck, look for gaps around railings, stairs, and the house. Allow access for repairs instead of hiding critical connections behind permanent furniture.

Is a large catio better than a fenced yard?

They solve different problems. A fenced yard may offer more running space; a fully enclosed catio offers a smaller area with an overhead boundary that you can inspect. Read our safety comparison before deciding which layout fits your cats and property.

Start with a layout, then a construction quote

Share photos, approximate dimensions, the number of cats, and the features that matter most. Our design service includes an on-site visit, measurements, a visual mockup, and a construction quote. See the cost guide for the difference between design fees and construction.
